Island-Park is a small town in Fremont County, located less than an hour from the Yellowstone National Park West entrance. The city was incorporated by owners of the many lodges and resorts along U.S. Route 20 in 1947 to circumvent Idahos liquor laws that prohibited the sale of liquor outside of city limits. It is only 500 feet wide in most locations and claims to have the "longest Main Street in the world," at 33 miles long. Island Park is known for its excellent fishing in both summer and winter. Henrys Lake and Island Park Reservoir offer cutthroat, rainbow and brook trout. There is an abundance of other recreational opportunities in Island Park, as well, including hiking and horseback riding trails and mountain biking. The scenery is incredible, with waterfalls, grassy meadows filled with wild flowers and mountains that rise more than 8,000 feet in elevation. Snowmobiling in the Island Park area is also fantastic, with hundreds of miles of groomed trails available. You can rent a snowmobile, or take a guided tour. Cross country ski trails also go from Island Park all the way to Harriman State Park. Island Park is also known for its historical landmarks such as Big Springs, Mesa Falls, Johnny Sacks Cabin, Quake Lake and more.

Island Park Weather & Climate

The upper corner of southeastern Idaho has a unique four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho, although the area is not in the mountains. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state.
