Salmon is a small town located in Lemhi County in east-central Idaho. The population was 3,122 residents as of the 2000 census. The town of Salmon is home to the Sacajawea Interpretive Culture and Education Center, which focuses on Lemhi Shoshone culture, as well as the interaction between Lewis and Clark and Sacajawea and other Shoshone. The Lewis and Clark Expedition crossed the continental divide at Lemhi Pass, just 30 miles southeast of Salmon. They followed the Salmon River through the present site of the town, then ascended the north fork of the river into present-day Montana near the Lost Trail Pass. Sacajawea, the only female in the party, was born in Lemhi Valley near the present-day city of Salmon. The river and the beautiful Beaverhead Mountains offer wild lands to get away from it all and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Just a few of the activities available in the area include white-water rafting, tubing, fishing, hunting, hiking and horseback riding. There are several companies in the Salmon region that offer guided trail rides, rafting trips and backpacking and horse pack trips into the mountains. As you float down the Salmon River on a raft and feel the rapids, youll soon understand why its called The River of No Return. Its a thrill youll want to experience again and again. Other attractions in the town of Salmon include the Sacajawea Center, which is an interpretive, cultural and educational center situated on a 71-acre park that is dedicated to Sacajawea and her people. The Lemhi County Museum is also located in beautiful downtown Salmon.

Salmon Weather & Climate

Central Idaho has a four season climate with warm summers, cool winters and low humidity throughout the state. The four seasons are distinct in all parts of Idaho, but not simultaneous. Spring comes earlier and winter later to central Idaho, which is protected from severe weather by nearby mountains and call themselves "banana belts." Eastern Idaho has a more continental climate, with more extreme temperatures; climatic conditions there and elsewhere vary with the elevation. Precipitation averages 13 inches per year in the south and over 30 inches in the north. Much greater accumulations of snow are experienced in the mountains. Much of the central plains of the lower elevations of central Idaho receive less than 10 inches of precipitation annually.
