Stanley is a tiny town located in Custer County in the mountains of central Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the population of Stanley was 100 full time residents. The town sits at an elevation of 6,253-feet in an area known as the American Alps. Stanley is known for its cold temperatures - even in summer. An A.P. article referred to Stanley as routinely the coldest place in the lower 48 states. However, Stanley has an ideal location within the Rockies, as it is surrounded by the White Cloud, the Boulder and the Sawtooth Mountain Ranges. Many peaks are over 10,000 feet. Stanley is also surrounded by three national forests: Boise, Challis and Sawtooth. In addition, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area and the Salmon River provide many outdoor recreational opportunities. Activities include mountain biking, hiking, fishing. white-water rafting, horseback riding, snowmobiling and camping. Of course, the scenery alone is enough to draw visitors to Stanley, where the towering Sawtooth Mountains arguably creates the most impressive skyline in the west. A variety of restaurants, shops, outfitters and lodging can be found in town, and several special events are hosted year round, including an annual 4th of July Kids Parade and Fireworks. Stanley is about a 130-mile drive east of Boise.

Stanley Weather & Climate

Central Idaho has a four season climate with mild summers, cold winters and low humidity. In the mountains, near the city of Stanley, even in the middle of July, it is not uncommon for the low temperature to approach freezing. An A.P. article referred to the area as "routinely the coldest place in the lower 48 states," though the average high temperature in the summer is well above most western coastal cities. Precipitation varies, with much greater accumulations of snow in the mountains. Much of the central plains of the lower elevations of central Idaho receive less than 10 inches of precipitation annually.
