Weiser is a small town located in the rural part of western Idaho and is the county seat of Washington County. As of the 2000 census, the population was 5,343 residents. With its mild climate, the citys economy is supported by farms, orchards, and livestock. Weiser, pronounced Weezer, sits at the confluence of the Weiser River and the great Snake River, near the border of Oregon. Weiser bills itself as the Fiddling Capital of the World, and is most famous for The National Oldtime Fiddlers Contest, which has been held in the city every year since 1953. Although fiddling contests were held in Weiser since 1914, the present festival was started by Blaine Stubblefield, a fiddler and folk music collector and head of the citys Chamber of Commerce. The festival is held at the beginning of summer, during the third full week in June. It draws national media coverage and over 7,000 visitors to the town of Weiser. Since the year 2000, the Weiser Fiddle Festival has also become known for the quality clogging that has been performed as part of the festivities. Other attractions include many historic buildings, which are listed on the National Historic Register, including the Union Pacific Train Depot and Pythian Castle.

Weiser Weather & Climate

West-central Idaho has a four-season, semi-arid climate with warm summers, cool winters and low humidity. Spring comes earlier and winter later to central Idaho, which is protected from severe weather by nearby mountains and call themselves "banana belts." Eastern Idaho has a more continental climate, with more extreme temperatures; climatic conditions there and elsewhere vary with the elevation. Precipitation averages 13 inches per year in the south and over 30 inches in the north. Much greater accumulations of snow are experienced in the mountains. Much of the central plains of the lower elevations of central Idaho receive less than 10 inches of precipitation annually.
