Its nestled on the banks of the Big Wood River at the base of Bald Mountain, surrounded by 9,000 foot mountain peaks. Many call this area of Idaho the "American Alps." The town of Ketchum began as a mining community during the boom of the 1880s. After the development of Sun Valley in 1936, it became popular among many celebrities, including author, Ernest Hemingway. Today, Ketchums economy is based on tourism. The town is also known as the gateway to the Sawtooth Recreation Area, and is filled with fine restaurants, art galleries, boutiques and great lodging. Ketchum Weather & Climate

Southeastern Idaho has a four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state. Occasionally, moisture-laden air from the south produces thunderstorms.
