Sun-Valley is an upscale ski resort and village located in Blaine County in central Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the permanent population was 1,427 residents. However, few residents live year-round in Sun Valley, with most coming from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and even as far as Chicago and New York City. Sun Valley is called the "original ski resort," and was established in 1936 to compete with the great ski resorts of Europe. Sun Valley is popular for alpine skiing at Bald Mountain, which is the main ski mountain and Dollar Mountain, which is geared more for the beginner to intermediate skier. Bald Mountain, known as "Baldy," has a summit of 9,150 feet and a vertical drop of 3400 feet. With its abundance of constant-pitch terrain, at varying degrees of difficulty, coupled with its substantial vertical drop and absence of wind, Baldy has often been referred to as the best single ski mountain in the world. The treeless Dollar Mountain, at 6638 feet, has a moderate vertical drop of 628 feet. Aside from skiing, visitors come to Sun Valley to enjoy ice skating, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, tennis and golf. Sun Valley is also near the Sawtooth National Recreational Area, which is accessed via Highway 75, over the Sawtooth Scenic Byway. Sun Valley is adjacent to the city of Ketchum, Idaho and the whole region is often referred to as "Sun Valley." Many rich and famous people have homes in the area, and Sun Valley offers unique shopping, fine restaurants, day spas, ice shows, sleigh rides and much more.

Sun Valley Weather & Climate

Southeastern Idaho has a four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state. Occasionally, moisture-laden air from the south produces thunderstorms.
